The Access Initiative and PP10The Access Initiative (TAI) is a global coalition of civil society organizations promoting national-level implementation of commitments to access to information, participation, and justice in decision-making that affects the environment. We believe that the establishment of transparent, accountable, and participatory decision-making is instrumental to address two main challenges facing the world in the new millennium - poverty alleviation and environmentally sustainable development. The Access Initiative has developed a set of indicators that civil society groups can use to assess how well their governments are performing at providing access to information, participation, and justice in decision-making. Such independent monitoring provides a crucial tool for governments, businesses, and other stakeholders as they set priorities for policy change and work to implement their commitments. PP10 will use the findings from TAI assessments to improve national and local access to information, participation, and justice in environmental decision-making. Those groups who have joined TAI may also join PP10. The Access Initiative Publications
The Access Initiative: A Step-By-Step Guide to Assessing the Implementation of Principle 10 (forthcoming!) This users' guide to The Access Initiative provides a set of tools that allow groups and individuals to assess their own governments' performance on the national-level implementation of Principle 10. The guide walks researchers through the process of assembling a research coalition, launching a study, finalizing the data, and facilitating review panels for quality assurance. Based on experiences in nine pilot-test countries, the Guide provides tools to monitor governments, produce indicators, and to work with other stakeholders in translating such research into policy reform. Visit The Access Initiative website for more information, to order publications, and to view the results of the first pilot-tests.
