Nowadays people witness the negative consequences of the technological development and have realized that the natural resources are being scarce and must be used more wisely if the world is to develop at the same pace. The technological development that the humankind has witnessed for several decades now, is much responsible poses a serious environmental risk, a risk that people have taken and which they are determined to minimize. Here one can learn more about the Rio Conference, an international summit which reunited over 170 governments in the world with the aim of finding solutions to solve the climate change problem. The Rio Conference was held in 1992 and it is also known under other several names such as the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, Earth Summit or the Rio Summit. The conference gathered 172 governments, over 2,400 representatives of worldwide NGOs, and more than 17,000 people at the parallel NGO Global Forum who had a consultative status. The importance of the event can be simply deducted from the fact that 108 out of 172 governments were represented by the heads of state or government which means that this summit was given a significant importance. Many issues had been discussed during the summit but some of the most important included finding solutions for the challenges that climate change has brought about. Important issues that were discussed included the systematic scrutiny of patterns of production for the toxic components in products that are vital for many industries, such as gasoline. Moreover, the summit also featured discussions on developing alternative solutions to fossil fuels, thought to be the main responsible for climate change as well as improving public transportation and reducing the use of personal cars, especially in cities. |
