Green Building as Sustainable Development

The climate change that every individual around the world is witnessing nowadays has brought into the attention of individuals and policymakers the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development, in principle, means that the natural resources of the world should be used in much more efficient ways and when possible alternatives means to create energy should be developed. Here one can learn more about how green building can save some of the natural resources of the Earth in order to prevent climate change and other potential negative impacts that energy wasting has on the planet.

Green building, otherwise referred to as green construction or even sustainable building, involves using structures and processes that are environmentally responsible and efficient in terms of resources at all the levels of a building’s life-cycle, from its design and up to its construction and lastly, demolition. Green building is a practice that builds on classical building designs but which implies concerns of economy, durability and comfort. The green building industry is developing at a rather fast pace and new technologies and techniques are being invented along the way, but there are some basic techniques and principles behind the whole idea of green building. Commonly, these practices include saving or better said efficiently using natural resources such as water, energy and others, protecting the health of the occupant and reducing environmental degradation and waste as well as the pollution that results with it.

Green building is not however to be confused with natural building, a rather similar concept but at a different level. Natural building is mostly concerned with using readily available natural materials in the building processes. Green building on the other hand relies on using technological development in order to find better solutions to climate change and environmental degradation. Yet, despite being regarded as a viable solution, green building remains largely inaccessible to most individuals as it is much more expensive than traditional building.
