Sustainable Development Critique

Sustainable development is a concept that is being used more and more often these days as an answer to issues of climate change and environmental risk. The idea of sustainable development arises from the fact that the natural resources are scarce and insufficient for the actual needs of the humankind but which must be used wisely if a sustainable world is to preserve this resources for the generations yet to come. There is a wide consensus regarding sustainable development in terms that everyone recognizes that the natural resources must be better protected and that alternatives must be developed if the world is to avoid the negative impacts of climate change. Yet, some criticism rose with regards to the notion of sustainable development. Here one can read more about this criticism.

Some specialists, in particular economists, point that the concept of sustainable development may be dangerous as its consequences are largely unknown. Some of them such as John Baden claim that in economy everything is interdependent and sustainable development policies which are not thought on the long term and which do not encompass and prevent the potential negative effects (on the economy) of such eco-friendly policies may in the end be dangerous and damaging. Moreover, some specialists argue against the term sustainable development itself as they claim it is too vague to describe the action needs or policies needed in this century.

Other individuals, such as Sylvie Brunel, criticize the very basis of the sustainable development as she identifies a distinction based on good and evil, similar to that found in Christianity. Moreover she implies that sustainable development can be a tool in preventing the development of other countries, by the richer countries and she sees sustainable development as a form of protectionism in today’s capitalist economy of the developed countries.
