British Council Seminar: Environmental Governance: Principles and Practice Para 8.2 of Agenda 21, the United Nations' Programme of Action for Sustainable Development Environmental governance comprises the principles of access to environmental information, participation and justice. As the world becomes ever more globalised and answers for social and environmental justice are sought, understanding environmental governance is becoming increasingly important. This international seminar tackles the complexity of environmental governance as it relates to development, politics and economics. It offers a unique opportunity for organisations and individuals from around the world to discuss the principles of environmental governance and its practical application to major issues such as climate change and civil participation. It also provides the opportunity to discover how environmental governance can act as a tool for sustainable development, environmental protection and poverty alleviation at local, national and international levels in the developed and the developing world. Main topics include:defining and exploring environmental governance, economic and political incentives and barriers, practical application of environmental governance, environmental citizenship and participation, climate change and climate justice During the seminar plenty of time will be given for dialogue and exploration of 'real life situations'. For that purpose all participants will get the opportunity to raise their own environmental governance concerns. Everyone attending the seminar should therefore come prepared for a lively programme of presentations and dialogue and for the development of action plans. Early applicants will stand the best chance of being asked to present their case study to the seminar. WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR?The seminar is aimed at policy makers in government, non-governmental organisations and business; local, national and international agencies and other bodies implementing or influencing issues of environmental information, planning, participation, climate change and environmental justice. It is also of interest to those working in development, poverty alleviation, law, media and non-governmental organisations with an environmental governance remit or project.
